The Kinky Project

Logo_Transparent_6ins-2 I can still remember on Sunday afternoons when my sister would have her hair straightened for school. She’d get one of the chairs and place it out in the doorway of the kitchen and wait while the straightening comb heated up. When the comb reached the desired temperature she would proceed to have her hair tamed and put it in whatever style she thought was the best combination of both cute and practical. All the while wincing and wiggling as the hot comb would sometimes touch her scalp. As a boy this was very strange to me. My hair just grew. The most i ever had to do was brush it (if i felt like it) or get it cut ; a $5 process that insured i’d be fresh to death for school the following two weeks and left no burn marks. A process that was so simple and painless that it baffled me that girls would endure what i thought was torture  in order to be seen as beautiful. As an adult i’ve come to witness more and more women fight back against the mindset that only straight hair is attractive and have come to embrace the kinky and versatile nature of their hair that people said was ugly to me as a child. So i thought to celebrate this new movement with a collection of photos. Along the way I worked closely with 3 stylists; Davielle Whyms , Chi’Kara Armbrister of The Artisans and Yaschika Carey of Afrotique and makeup artist Khandise Smith. I’m also interested in doing a show featuring more women with natural hair.
